WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE MACARONESIAN FLORA,
TEN YEARS INTO THE 21ST CENTURY?
Celebrating 2010, the International Year on Biodiversity,
 we are organising an international symposium about
the Macaronesian flora.
 Macaronesian islands are considered as important
biodiversity hotspots, including a wealth of
plant biodiversity. This meeting will give a
 broad overview of Macaronesian plant diversity,
 from marine algae to angiosperms, in areas
encompassing systematics, phylogenetics, evolution,
 biogeography, ecology, conservation, ethnobotany
and plant resources. We also welcome communications
dealing with the botanical history of Macaronesia.
The symposium will address the flora from a biological
perspective, but also facing it as crucial resource for
 sustainable development.
SYMPOSIUM VENUE
The meeting will take place from 23-25 September
2010 in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal.
 It will be hosted by the Biology Department, University of the Azores.
LUNCH & DINNER
You can easily find a good meal for a reasonable price
in Ponta Delgada restaurants and snack-bars.
From hamburgers, sandwiches and soup to Portuguese
and Azorean food. The marketplace is very close to
the University, so you can also find stands with
cheese, fresh vegetables, fruits, fish and meat.
At the University, we also have a snack-bar where
you can have a complete meal (soup, main dish,
dessert, drink and coffee) for about 7.00 euro.
If you want to make lunch reservations, please
contact the registration desk upon arrival.
ACCOMPAINING PERSONS We have organised two
half-day visits for accompaining persons. Visit 1.
Thursday 23-09-10
• Excursion to Sete Cidades village and lake.
• 14:30 Bus departure from Ponta Delgada after lunch.
Visit 2. Friday 24-09-10
• Visit to pineapple plantations in greenhouses in Ponta Delgada.
 Visit to a traditional ceramic factory in Lagoa.
• 14:30 Bus departure from Ponta Delgada after lunch.
You can book for the visits during registration.
SOCIAL EVENTS/FEES
The following events are included in the registration fee and
 are open to participants and accompaning persons, who paid
the registration fee (60 Euro):
● Welcome reception (23-09-10) ● Symposium dinner (24-09-10)
● Post-symposium tour (26-09-10)
Please, state the events that you will attend in your application.
For students who only want to attend the meeting sessions
registration fee will be 25 Euro.
